Stun Guns

A non-lethal defensive weapon, many law enforcement and security professionals utilize stun guns to subdue would-be assailants without killing or permanently injuring them. These tools have proven effective in protecting people without harm to others.

Stun Gun Function

Stun guns release a high-voltage electrical charge that disrupts a body's own neurological system. The effect of the voltage passing through a body causes muscles to suddenly begin working at a highly accelerated pace. This action thus depletes blood sugar much faster than normal causing almost instant fatigue throughout the body and effectively disables the individual. The effect of the stun also impairs the electrical impulses carried by the nervous system that enable voluntary movement. Contact of one to two seconds is sufficient to render most attackers disabled and dazed. The effect of the stun may lasts several minutes.

However, as the gun uses very low amperage the intensity of the shock remains low. Therefore, the individual does not suffer any permanent damage. In addition, the shock does not pass between bodies, so there is no related danger in touching an individual disabled by a stun gun. Often, stun guns offers advantages to their users. The sound of a stun gun can be very startling and some models feature an additional set of electrodes that produce sparks, another deterrent.

These weapons rely on batteries, usually the simple nine-volt variety, to generate power. Transformers increase voltage and an oscillator modifies the current to specific patterns. The oscillator then relays the current to a capacitor that concentrates an electrical charge and sends it to the electrodes which deliver the shock. Different models address practicality and portability. For example, some are small enough to fit in a woman's purse. Some double as flashlights and cellular telephones, disguising the weapon component. Voltage also varies among weapons, so you should choose a model that generates as much voltage as possible while still be compact and lightweight enough to carry.

Stun guns enable many people to protect themselves against physical attacks without causing permanent damage or death to assailants. For this reason, many law-enforcement and security professionals rely on them for protection. They use high-voltage, low-amperage electrical currents to disrupt a body's neurological system. The electrical current causes muscles to work rapidly and suddenly causing almost instant fatigue and daze, effectively disabling attackers.
